John Dickinson

The Plantation features an elegant 1740 brick house, reconstructed outbuildings, and a log'd dwelling. John Dickinson is known as the 'Penman of the American Revolution" and signed the Federal Constitution. Tours and programs enable visitors to compare and contrast lifestyles of the wealthy Dickinson family with those of tenants, poor whites, slaves, and free blacks residing in Kent County during the 1700s and early 1800s. Thematic related merchandise is sold in the history store. Call the museum for reservations and to obtain information about the following interactive and special focus group tour programs.

The Tours:
POLITICS AND PLANTATION  (adults/students; 1.5 hrs.)
Reviews the life of John Dickinson and the people (tenants, slaves, contractors, business associates) with whom he interacted in the Kent County area during the late 1700s.
MAN, MARSH, MOSQUITO (adult/students; 1.5 hrs.)
Reviews historical documents that convey information about man and his interaction with the environment in the St. Jones tidal marsh ecosystem.
IN THE BEST MANNER  (grades 2-12; adults; 2 hrs.)
Compares and contrasts social differences in ownership of items and stylistic changes in architecture and decorative arts.
A WORLD APART  (grades 2-12; adults; 2 hrs.)
Synthesizes historical data about slaves and free Blacks residing in Jones Neck.
PATTERN TOURS (grades 4-8; 1.5 hrs.)
Utilizes patterns, textures, shapes, forms, and designs in architecture, clothing, and decorative arts to explain how people lived in a plantation setting 250 years ago.
DICKINSON PLANTATION PROFILES (grades 4-12, adults; 2 hrs.)
Explains use of primary and secondary resource materials to interpret the
Plantation's history.

Tour Details:
  • Reservations are required 2 weeks in advance.
  • Communicate special needs when making reservations.
  • Special focus tours are available upon request.
  • Outdoor picnic lunch space is available, however there are no inside lunch facilities.
  • Many programs or demonstrations are offered on a weather permitting basis. The site supervisor may substitute a different activity at anytime.
  • In conjunction with group tours, packages containing items relating to a thematic tour may be ordered in advance.  Selected merchandise, appropriate to age and suitable for continued education at home or in the classroom, may be ordered 2 weeks in advance of a scheduled visit.  Contact the Site Supervisor where you have booked a tour for information and cost.

Uses an imaginary tea party to explain John Dickinson's importance during the Revolutionary period and period etiquette.
THEN AND NOW (grades K-3; 1.5 hrs.)
Compares and contrasts historical information about the lifestyles of the Dickinson family, children, tenants, and slaves.
A SENSE OF THE PAST
(grades K-2; adults; 2 hrs.)
Highlights the use of sensory skills to interpret the past.
