Delaware Heritage Tour
A One-Day Tour in Central Delaware

Delaware’s capital city offers many opportunities to explore the
unique history and heritage of “The First State.” Meet the real Delaware face to face!

Begin your Delaware Heritage Tour with a visit to the Delaware Archaeology Museum in Downtown Dover to learn about the first Native American inhabitants of the Delmarva Peninsula, and the first colonial settlers from Sweden, Holland, and England.

Then, three blocks away, enjoy a guided tour of the Old State House on The Green to see the legislative chambers and courtroom of Delaware’s early state government. The Old State House, dating to 1792, is the second oldest in continuous use in the country (after Maryland’s State House.) Continue across Legislative Mall, a large open space for special events, to charming Legislative Hall, Delaware’s state capitol building, where the General Assembly now meets. Several blocks away, visit Woodburn, the Governor’s Mansion. Dating to the 1790’s, the home contains many beautiful antiques, several resident ghosts, and a tunnel door in the cellar once used to aid escaping slaves on the Underground Railroad.

Near the Old State House, in the Capitol Complex is the beautiful Delaware Public Archives.  The archives is a great place to see old photographs of the way Delaware and Dover were and to search out ancestors!  Take some time to surf the internet, browse through records, and take in a bit of "official" yesteryear.

After lunch, make a stop at the Delaware State Police Museum in north Dover. Stylish uniforms, old Harley Davidson patrol motorcycles, a 1946 police car, a crime scene with clues, and a 911 call center are some of the interesting displays about those who “Protect and Serve.”

Top off the afternoon with a visit to the Delaware Agricultural Museum & Village, a mile away. This nostalgic museum houses one of the first log cabins in America, antique tractors and other equipment, humorous folk art carvings, and a village of 20 outbuildings, including a mill, blacksmith shop, farmhouse, school, and more.

Before heading home, enjoy a fine dinner in a colonial atmosphere, or if you prefer, stop at one of the local buffet restaurants.
